ISE vs CDL Can Ends: Comprehensive Technical Comparison for CSD Packaging Lines
Published by Industrial Aluminum Packaging Insights | Technical Support Desk
1. Origins and Naming of CDL and ISE Can Ends
What is a CDL Can End?
CDL stands for Can Der Liner (often associated with innovative proprietary container development laboratories). It was engineered as a high-performance, lightweight EOE standard to break traditional monopolies. By optimizing the geometry of the countersink and curl, CDL ends achieve up to a 10% reduction in aluminum material usage while maintaining the strict buckle pressure resistance required for highly carbonated beverages.
What is an ISE Can End?
ISE represents Innovative Seaming End, a specialized standard developed by leading European and international tooling and packaging engineering consortiums. ISE ends are widely specified across major global beverage markets (such as Russia, the Middle East, and APAC) for high-speed automated filling lines utilizing premium automated seamer systems.
2. Structural Profile & Drawing Differences
Are CDL and ISE drawings identical? Absolutely not. While both are available in standard 200 and 202 diameters, their micro-geometric cross-sections, countersink depths, and curl angles are entirely distinct.
| Technical Parameter | CDL Profile Ends | ISE Profile Ends |
|---|---|---|
| Countersink Geometry | Proprietary angled groove wall for specialized stress distribution. | Unique depth and radius designed for specific tooling chucks. |
| Initial Curl Radius | Tight, compact curl tailored for CDL seaming rollers. | Distinct curvature requiring specific first-operation roll profiles. |
| Internal Coating Match | Optimized for generic and BPANI anti-corrosive liners. | Frequently paired with high-performance Epoxy-Phenolic coatings. |
3. Can You Substitute ISE with CDL by Adjusting the Seamer Chuck?
A common misconception among plant operators is that one profile can replace the other by simply fine-tuning the seamer’s height or Chuck clearance. This is highly critical and strongly discouraged for CSD packaging lines.
Because the internal countersink wall of an ISE end does not match a CDL Seaming Chuck, executing a run without proper conversion will cause the metal to wrinkle, slip, or crush during the double-seaming process.
Mandatory Tooling Requirements for Conversion:
To safely switch your supply chain from ISE to CDL ends, a full Seamer Tooling Changeover is required:
- Replace All Seaming Chucks: The chuck must perfectly match the specific countersink profile to provide rigid internal support.
- Change 1st & 2nd Operation Rollers: Roller grooves must be swapped to accommodate the unique curl geometry of the new lid, ensuring the proper hook length and overlap.
- Recalibrate Machine Head Height: Micro-adjustments are mandatory to prevent severe microscopic fractures in the internal lacquer coating (e.g., Epoxy-Phenolic), which can lead to beverage acid corrosion and premature leaks.
